10 Types of Friends In Your Life

types of friends

Friends are our family outside the closed walls of the house. They’ve got a huge contribution in making us who we’re as individuals. Their standing in life is inexpressible.

Friends form a big part of our lives for most of us. They’re the ones who walk through life together, share our ups and downs, and pains and joys. Without friends, life wouldn’t be the same at all. We wouldn’t be who we are if not for them.

Over the years I’ve been trying to decode the types of friendships that are available. Here’re some from my own experiences:

  1. HI-BYE friends: We can also call the mere acquaintances. These are the ones you see at school or work because the context calls for it. You say HI when you see each other and you say BYE at the end of the day, but that’s about it. The relationship never lasts when the context is removed, i.e. when you graduate from school or leave the workplace.
  2. Regular friends: Social, activity buddies you meet up now and then to catch up or hang out with. You can generally talk about regular topics.
  3. Social media friends: This type of friendship is new on the list. These are people who you know only through different social media platforms. There’s no real interaction.
  4. Pleasure friends: These people are rare but they exist. Many people make friends just for different kinds of pleasures. The domain if these pleasures are mostly sex or money and these people come together only when they need certain pleasure in life.
  5. Good times friends: These are friends who only meet at the bar; an expensive one. These friends never meet anywhere else or in times of distress and are not available in difficult times.
  6. Office friends: These are people in your workplace. You meet them every day and share your moments with them but only in the office.
  7. Sudden friends: Have you suddenly got a phone call from someone who hasn’t spoken to you for years? Yes, these are people who are your old acquaintance but they call you only when they need help; mostly money. They come with a bang and disappear in oblivion once their work is done.
  8. Placebo friends: You don’t have any idea why they’re your friends. They’re just there!
  9. Seasonal friends: These are the ones who come and go; like the season. Nobody knows why they come and where they go.
  10. Real or soul friends: People you can talk about anything and everything with. You may or may not meet up every day, but it doesn’t matter as the strength of your friendship isn’t determined by how frequently you meet up. These are the friends you can trust to be there for you whenever you need them, and they’ll go the extra mile for you.

Most of us are looking to make regular friends and if possible, true, soul friends. We probably have a lot of HI-BYE or good times friends — more than we can count. We need all types of friends but you need to choose your ratio.

The real or soul friends are difficult to find but they exist. These are the ones with whom you can even enjoy the silence. You’re there for each other regardless of the budget and place you meet.
