India’s Foundational Education Needs More Play, Not More Testing

India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 introduced a bold vision for early childhood education. By recognizing the importance of play-based learning during the foundational years, it aligned itself with decades of research in neuroscience, developmental psychology, and education. Yet, despite the policy shift, many schools continue to assess young children through academic readiness tests that contradict the very principles the policy promotes.

For generations, educational success in India’s early years has been associated with how quickly children learn to read, write, and count. Yet a growing body of evidence from neuroscience, developmental psychology, and international educational research suggests that this approach may be misplaced.

Children don’t learn best through early academic instruction; they learn through play, exploration, movement, imagination, and social interaction. While India’s NEP 2020 acknowledges this reality, a significant gap remains between policy aspirations and classroom practice. If India is serious about nurturing creative, resilient, and future-ready learners, it must move beyond academic readiness and fully embrace the science of learning through play.

What does science say?

Neuroscience shows that the early years are a period of rapid brain development. Young children learn best through exploration, movement, storytelling, social interaction, and play. These experiences strengthen attention, memory, language, emotional regulation, and problem-solving skills.

Developmental psychology reaches a similar conclusion. Children build knowledge through active engagement with their environment, not through early academic pressure. Play nurtures curiosity, creativity, confidence, self-regulation, and social competence — the foundations upon which later learning depends.

Learning from Finland and the Nordic countries

Finland, Denmark, and other Nordic nations have demonstrated that strong educational outcomes do not require earlier academics. Their early childhood systems prioritize play, well-being, collaboration, and creativity. Academic learning follows developmental readiness rather than age-based pressure.

Where does India still fall short?

These assessments often measure skills that developmental science suggests should emerge naturally through rich learning experiences rather than formal instruction.

The result is a gap between policy and practice. We’ve changed the age. We’ve changed the philosophy. But in many cases, we haven’t changed what we measure.

The way forward

India doesn’t need more academic testing in the foundational years. It needs assessment systems that value observation, curiosity, communication, social interaction, creativity, and self-regulation.

The challenge is no longer understanding how children learn. The science is clear. The challenge is ensuring that our schools, assessments, and expectations reflect that understanding.
