Some people are left-brained, logical and detail-driven. Others are right-brained, creative and intuitive. That’s the popular story, and it’s wrong. Neuroscience, including a landmark 2013 brain-imaging study, proves nobody’s brain runs mainly on one side. The left-brain, right-brain myth is a myth.

If you’ve taken a workplace personality quiz, you’ve run into this one before: left-brained people are logical and detail-oriented, right-brained people are creative and big-picture. It’s a fun way to label yourself, and it isn’t true.
Neuroscientists have known for a while that this isn’t how the brain works. But the left-brain, right-brain myth is hard to shake. It’s simple, it feels true, and it hands people a ready-made excuse for whatever they’re not good at.
Where did the idea come from?
The myth isn’t pulled out of thin air. It traces back to real research from the 1960s and ’70s on split-brain patients, people whose corpus callosum, the bundle of fibers connecting the brain’s two halves, had been surgically cut to treat severe epilepsy.
Roger Sperry and Michael Gazzaniga studied these patients and found that with the two halves unable to talk to each other, certain jobs like language and spatial processing leaned more on one side than the other (Atlassian, 2024). That’s the real science the left-brain, right-brain myth grew out of, then stretched well past what it actually showed.
That part is real, and it matters. Robert Shmerling explains in a Harvard Health blog post that language really does sit mostly on the left side for most people, and damage to specific spots in the brain causes specific losses, whether that’s movement, motivation, or eyesight (Shmerling, 2022).
The problem came next. People took some jobs lean on one side, and turned it into the idea that some people are ruled by one side, as your whole personality came from whichever half was in charge that day. A popular 1979 book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, made the idea even more popular. It said you could tap into your right brain to draw and think differently (Shmerling, 2022). But no research ever really backed that up.
What does the data actually show?
Shmerling makes a simple point: scan the brain of a mathematician and the brain of an artist, and you likely won’t find much difference. Do that for a thousand of each, and no clear pattern shows up either (Shmerling, 2022). Creativity and logic just don’t seem to live on one side of the brain.
In 2013, a team at the University of Utah put the idea to a direct test. Researchers led by Jared Nielsen scanned the resting brain activity of 1,011 people and checked whether individuals leaned toward one side overall (Nielsen et al., 2013). They found nothing.
Certain tasks still cluster on one side, sure, but that pattern held the same across everyone in the study, not as a trait that changes from person to person (University of Utah Health, 2013). Being left-brained or right-brained, the researchers said, is more a way of speaking than an accurate picture of how the brain is built (Shmerling, 2022).
This matches with newer creativity research, too. Roger Beaty‘s work shows that generating original ideas depends on networks that stretch across both halves of the brain, not one creative side working alone (Beaty et al., 2014). Why won’t the myth die?
If the science is this clear, why does the idea still show up in workshops and productivity blogs? Life coaches, self-help authors, and other pseudo-scientific voices have kept the story alive for decades, because it’s easy to package and sell (McKay, n.d.).
Partly it’s also because it’s a great story: you’re logical, or you’re creative is a satisfying label to hand someone, and it comes with a built-in excuse. Partly because there’s a bit of truth that some jobs lean on one side, it makes the exaggerated version feel believable.
There’s also a design problem. Whole curricula have been built around right-brain thinking as a fix for supposedly left-brain-heavy schooling, solving a problem that isn’t real. It’s a cousin of another popular myth, the idea that we only use 10% of our brains.
Neurologist Barry Gordon has flatly said we use virtually every part of the brain, and most of it stays active almost all the time. The truth is simpler and stronger: your whole brain works, all the time, not just one side or one small slice.
Shmerling adds a fair point here, too: a lack of proof isn’t proof of the opposite. Researchers still study which side leans on which for tasks like language or recognizing faces (Shmerling, 2022). What’s been debunked isn’t that some tasks favor one side. It’s the idea that this adds up to a left-brain or right-brain personality.
