The Hornbill Festival is a celebration held every year from 1-10 December, in Nagaland, India.
The state of Nagaland is home to several tribes, which have distinct festivals. More than 60% of the population here depends on agriculture and therefore most of their festivals revolve around agriculture. The Nagas consider their festivals sacred, so participation in these festivals is essential.
The festival is held near the capital of the state; in village Kisama. There is no hotel but there are home-stays available. I stayed in such a place when I visited the festival in 2015.
I stayed in a home in Kigwema village. The village is near the festival site and belongs to the local tribe. There were several rooms in the wooden home and I was offered the corner room.
The host were two sisters. The place is surrounded by huge mountains and clear blue skies. The food available is usually non-vegetarian but they made vegetarian food for me.
I received one of the finest hospitality ever in this homestay. If you’re in India, don’t forget to plan to visit this colorful land of the Nagas, for this festival and grab an opportunity to stay with these lovely people.
