What’s positive psychology?
It’s the scientific study of the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive. It’s founded on the belief that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play.
The term positive psychology is a broad one, encompassing several techniques that encourage people to identify and further develop their own positive emotions, experiences, and character traits.
Dr. Martin Seligman, the founder of positive psychology, has described its core philosophy as a BUILD WHAT’S STRONG approach that can supplement the FIX WHAT’S WRONG approach of psychological therapies.
Introduction to the PERMA model
It’s widely recognized and influential in positive psychology. Dr. Seligman proposed this model to help explain and define well-being in greater depth. PERMA is an acronym for the five facets of well-being:
- Positive Emotions: Even though looking for positive emotions alone is not a real way to boost your well-being, feeling positive emotion is an important feature. Part of well-being is enjoying yourself at the moment, i.e. experiencing positive emotions.
- Engagement: Having a sense of engagement, in which we may lose track of time and become completely absorbed in something we enjoy and excel at, is an important piece of well-being. It’s hard to have a developed sense of well-being if you aren’t truly engaged in anything you do;
- Relationships: Humans are social creatures, and we rely on connections with others to truly flourish. Having deep, meaningful relationships with others is vital to our well-being;
- Meaning: Even someone who’s deliriously happy most of the time may not have a developed sense of well-being if they don’t find meaning in their life. When we bestow ourselves to a cause or identify something bigger than ourselves, we experience a sense of meaning that there’s no replacement for.
- Achievement: We all thrive when we are succeeding, achieving our goals, and bettering ourselves. Without a determination to accomplish and achieve, we’re missing one of the pieces of authentic well-being.

Ways to apply positive psychology
There’re are many ways to apply positive psychology in your life and work. Here’re are some of the ways:
- Cultivate gratitude: When was the last time you thanked a friend or someone in the family? Gratitude is the best attitude. It’s strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. It helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deals with adversity, and build strong relationships. Writing a gratitude journal is a good idea.
- Practice mindfulness: By practicing mindfulness, you can learn to savor and appreciate the little things in your life that are happening right now. It can help us to increase our ability to regulate emotions, decrease stress, anxiety, and depression. It can also aid us to focus our attention, as well as to detect our thoughts and feelings without judgment.
- Build a growth mindset: When you build a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset, you embrace challenges, learn from criticism, face setbacks with resilience, find lessons, and inspiration from others. Such a mindset helps you to move from NO to YES.
- Practice optimism: Establish a personal goal to track your progress, and not necessarily the finish line. When you master the attitude of optimism, you understand that goodness exists in the world in abundance and good things are coming and that the bad things pass quickly and can be ignored.
- Write your future diary: When you see yourself as capable of solving problems, you’re more likely to find ways to solve your problems. Write about your preferred future. What will it look like? How will others respond to you in this positive future? What will you feel? How will your life change? How will your future benefit others?
- Do random acts of kindness: The warm feeling of well-being that washes over you when you’ve done something kind isn’t just in your head. It’s in your brain chemicals, too. Acts of kindness can release hormones that contribute to your mood and overall well being.
What are your signature strengths?
Signature strengths are the strongest or most prominent in your strengths profile. Ultimately, they’re likely to be the strengths that matter most to you, that are most central to your identity. They’re important for mental wellness and positive psychology. They’re how we love to interact with the world and gain the most meaning from it.
